Devil’s Island

The inspiration for this came from a photo I had taken while visiting Guiana.  The 1973 motion picture “Papillon” which featured Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman was based on a novel by French ex-convict Henri Charriere.  Henri was serving a sentence at the notorious prison on Devil’s Island in French Guiana.  Living condition at the prison was described as hellish.  A walking tour of the prison cells made it very clear to the hellish conditions.

The palm leaves are free motion machine embroidered. The entire quilt is raw edge fused applique.  Commercial cottons and batiks were used.   Finished size 34″ x 43″.
